James C. McTurnan
“My goal as a family law attorney is to deliver to my clients the best possible outcome with the least amount of stress.”
Jim McTurnan joined Plog and Stein in 2019, seizing an opportunity to narrow his focus and indulge his passion for family law. Jim brings to the firm nearly a decade of family law experience. He began practicing as a Denver family law attorney in 2009 while working for a general practice law firm. During his time at that firm, Jim discovered that he especially enjoyed his family law cases and that he has a knack for developing strong rapport with clients as they navigate difficult personal and family transitions. Jim found that family law cases can be some of the most gratifying experiences because there is an opportunity to really make a positive impact on people’s lives. His philosophy is that it is essential for a client to know what to expect at every turn, and to have confidence that an answer to any question is just a phone call or email away. He believes that it is his responsibility to make sure that his clients have the tools needed to set realistic goals at the outset of the case. He feels the key to building a strong attorney-client relationship is setting measured, achievable goals and then reaching those milestones efficiently. With each case, Jim uses his skills and experience, both in and out of the courtroom, when dealing with litigation or settlement. As part of his practice, Jim deals with all aspects of divorce, child custody, and child support cases.
At the beginning of 2016, after nearly seven years, Jim left his prior firm with the intent to transition to an exclusively family law practice. His plans were ultimately delayed for a few years when he was presented with a unique chance to undertake some groundbreaking and historic work in Colorado’s burgeoning state-regulated cannabis industry. From 2016 through 2018, Jim took on the role of general counsel for one of Colorado’s largest retailers of medical and recreational cannabis. In this position, Jim was initiated quickly. Just a few weeks into the job, as he guided the cannabis company through a controversial licensing dispute with the City of Denver, the dispute began garnering national media attention. Jim found himself quoted in Time Magazine, the New York Post, The Denver Post and other national media outlets. The role was a challenging and rewarding experience for which Jim will forever be grateful.
However, Jim still longed to shift his career focus to family law. After meeting Stephen Plog and Laura Stein in early 2019, Jim was confident he had found the right firm to build the family law practice he was seeking. As the newest member of the Plog & Stein team, Jim comes to us with the skill set necessary to genuinely deliver quality representation to each client he serves.
Jim was born in Kansas City, Missouri but spent most of his time growing up between Houston, Texas and London, England. He has now been living in Colorado for over 20 years. He received his bachelor’s degree in geography from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He then received his juris doctor from the University of Denver’s Sturm College of Law. During law school, Jim worked as a legal intern for the National Park Service’s Environmental Quality Division.
Jim’s decision to attend law school was based in part upon a long family tradition of practicing law. His grandfather was a state court judge in Deadwood, South Dakota, and Jim’s father worked internationally as a corporate lawyer. Several of his other family members have also dedicated their careers to the practice of law.
Outside of the office, Jim loves live music, dining, traveling, and exploring the great outdoors. He also still occasionally plays guitar. Before settling into his legal career, Jim was a working musician. He has completed several national tours, played Red Rocks, appeared on the cover of the Westword, and for one glorious week in the summer of 2007, he held the number 42 spot on the college radio top-200 chart, which surveys the most-played albums on stations across the U.S. and Canada.
Jim lives in Denver with his wife and two demanding cats. With his legal skills, insights, and work ethic, we believe Mr. McTurnan will be a valuable asset to both Plog & Stein, P.C. and our clients.
