Going Through a Divorce This Holiday Season? Consider These 6 Tips

Divorce is difficult enough at any time of year, but it can be even more so around the holidays. In addition to the stress, anger, or sadness brought on by this major life change, it can be even more emotional to realize that celebrating the holidays may look very different from now on. Although the legal and personal process can make for turbulent times, it is important to remember that divorce does not define you, nor does it have the power to ruin your happiness.

Having helped numerous clients navigate their Colorado divorce proceedings, including during the holiday season, we’ve seen the common issues that arise and have learned how to best approach them. This holiday season, keep these thoughts in mind to help you get through the rough patches:

  • Take a break from worrying about your divorce and try to focus more on yourself and what you can do for your own wellbeing.
  • Try to embrace your new lifestyle. You shouldn’t feel compelled to attend any holiday gatherings you attended with your ex-spouse if you don’t want to. In fact, now may be a great time to forge some new traditions of your own.
  • Divorce and property division can impact your finances, and you shouldn’t feel guilty about trimming back your gift list. In the spirit of giving, small gifts to those who are closest to you are appropriate and are sure to be appreciated.
  • Focus on “me time.” Instead of Christmas dinner with the in-laws, fill your extra time by getting involved with a creative project, reading a good book, getting active, or doing charitable work. Enjoyable and enriching activities can go a long way in helping you avoid the feeling of empty time during this time of transition.
  • If you have children, be understanding that this is a big time of transition for them, too. Make sure that you allow your children to spend time with both of their parents, avoid bad-mouthing the other parent in their presence, and give them the opportunity to enjoy the holiday season. Your children are looking to you for guidance, so set a good example by being as levelheaded, fair, and collected as possible.
